Throughout March, swimmers across Australia are taking part in Laps for Life, a nationwide swimming challenge raising funds for youth mental health and suicide prevention. At South East Leisure, we’re proud to provide high-quality aquatic facilities to support community members who are taking on this challenge for a meaningful cause.
One of those swimmers is Paul Parer who, together with his wife, Frances, regularly swims at Dandenong Oasis. This March, however, their swims have taken on a deeper meaning.
Elizabeth’s Story
Paul and Frances are swimming in memory of their granddaughter, Elizabeth, who tragically died by suicide last October at the age of 16.
Elizabeth was an intelligent Year 10 student with many passions. She loved music and enjoyed playing the flute, and she was an active member of the local Venturer Scouts unit. Hiking adventures and performing in Scout Showtime each year were highlights for her.
Swimming was also something Elizabeth truly loved.
She learned to swim from an early age at Paul Sadler Swimland Rowville, and the pool became a place where she could reset and find joy. Even after a difficult day, an evening swim could completely turn things around.
Elizabeth may have not been the fastest swimmer, but she had incredible endurance. She loved distance swimming and proudly earned awards for completing 5km, 7km and 10km swims.
Swimming in Her Memory
In honour of Elizabeth, Paul and Frances have taken on Laps for Life this March.
The challenge encourages participants to swim throughout the month while raising funds for ReachOut Australia, which provides vital mental health resources and support for young people across the country.
Together, Paul and Frances plan to swim 20 times during March, dedicating each session to raising awareness and funds for youth suicide prevention.
They hope that their efforts may also inspire others in the community to get involved and support the cause.
Supporting Youth Mental Health
Every lap swum during Laps for Life helps raise awareness and funding for youth mental health services. These funds help ensure young people experiencing mental health challenges have access to the support and resources they need.
If you would like to support Paul and Frances in honouring Elizabeth and raising funds for youth suicide prevention, you can donate through their fundraising page:
